UK passport fees to exceed £100 under new plans

Online passport cost set to rise

The UK government has announced plans to increase UK passport fees, with the cost of an online adult passport expected to exceed £100 for the first time.

Under the proposals, the fee for adults applying online in the UK would rise from £94.50 to £102, while children’s passports would increase from £61.50 to £66.50. The Home Office said the changes aim to ensure the passport system covers its costs and relies less on taxpayers.

Increases across all application types

Postal applications in the UK would also become more expensive, with adult fees rising from £107 to £115.50 and children’s fees from £74 to £80.

The one-day premium service would increase from £222 to £239.50.

For overseas applications, online passport fees would rise from £108 to £116.50 for adults and from £70 to £75.50 for children. Paper applications submitted abroad would increase to £130 for adults and £89 for children.

Changes expected in April

The government expects the new UK passport fees to take effect on 8 April, subject to approval by Parliament.

The Home Office said the fees help cover the cost of processing applications, consular support overseas, and border services for British citizens. Officials also advised travellers to apply early, as renewals can take up to three weeks in the UK and longer during busy periods.

Passport fees have risen several times in recent years, including a 7% increase in 2024 and a 9% rise in 2023.
