Ecumenical Patriarchate dismisses second appeal against suspension

The Ecumenical Patriarchate informed the Holy Synod of the Church of Cyprus that Bishop Tychikos’ second appeal, challenging his suspension, has been rejected, according to the spokesperson of the Archdiocese of Cyprus, Christakis Efstathiou.

Church focuses on reorganisation and new elections

Following the decision, the Holy Synod is concentrating on completing the restructuring of the church’s statutes and advancing procedures for the election of a new Bishop of Paphos. Efstathiou noted that it is now up to Bishop Tychikos to decide on his next steps.

Background on the appeals

Bishop Tychikos had filed a new appeal at the end of January, contesting the Synod’s decision to place him on leave. The Church of Cyprus previously described this action as contradictory, given that he had not accepted the original decision of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and had also attempted to challenge it in civil courts.

Efstathiou highlighted that the Holy Synod does not intend to engage further with Bishop Tychikos’ actions, suggesting that third parties may be influencing him toward misguided decisions.
