Turkey hosts new Patriot system at Incirlik Air Base
NATO is reinforcing air defences in southern Turkey with the deployment of a new U.S. Patriot missile system to Adana, home to the Incirlik Air Base, the Turkish Defence Ministry announced on Wednesday. The base hosts personnel from the United States, Qatar, Spain, Poland, and Turkish troops.
Strengthening regional missile defences
The ministry said the deployment, commissioned by NATO’s Allied Air Command in Ramstein, Germany, complements the existing Spanish Patriot system already stationed at Adana. This move comes after a recent deployment to Malatya province, near a NATO radar base, as part of enhanced measures to protect against potential missile threats linked to the Iran war.
Turkey’s air defence strategy
Despite its growing defence industry, Turkey does not yet have a fully independent air defence system. It has relied on NATO assets in the eastern Mediterranean to intercept missiles it claims were fired from Iran since the conflict began. Officials stressed that the additional Patriot system aims to further safeguard Turkish airspace and citizens.
