EAC employees to hold three-hour strike

Date:

EAC workers are staging a three-hour strike today from 8:00 to 11:00 a.m. to protest serious problems affecting the organisation and the wider electricity sector.

Workers protest over sector problems

In a letter to the EAC Board, the trade unions highlighted the worsening situation in the electricity sector, citing negative consequences for both consumers and the national economy. They blamed the lack of strategic planning by the state and the delays and inaction of the relevant authorities.

The unions noted that during prior meetings with the EAC Board, there was alignment on the need for solutions. “Unfortunately, these issues remain unresolved, and we also observe state actions that exacerbate the situation,” the unions said in their letter.

Calls for strategic energy planning

The unions criticised the government for focusing on impractical proposals instead of implementing necessary measures to ensure electricity adequacy, supply security, consumer support, and accessible solar energy. They said such measures have backfired, increasing rather than lowering electricity costs.
