Supporting Ukraine amid the conflict

Sean Penn missed the Oscars this year, where he won his third Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in One Battle After Another, to make a personal visit to Ukraine.

The actor met with President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv on Monday, demonstrating his continued support for the war-torn country. Zelensky praised Penn for standing with Ukraine since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022.

A history of solidarity

Penn has visited Ukraine multiple times since 2022 and has been vocal about the country’s defence against Russian aggression. In 2022, he described Ukraine’s fight as “the tip of the spear for the democratic embrace of dreams,” warning that allowing the nation to stand alone would endanger American values.

The actor also presented one of his Oscars to Zelensky that year, promising to keep it in Kyiv until Ukraine achieves victory. In recognition of his support, Ukraine awarded Penn the Order of Merit, third degree.

Documenting the conflict

In addition to his visits, Penn produced the documentary Superpower, which explores the war in Ukraine and Zelensky’s leadership. The film premiered at the Berlinale in 2023, further highlighting Penn’s commitment to raising awareness of the ongoing conflict.
