Lawyers dispute investigation findings
The mystery surrounding the Banksy identity has resurfaced after a new investigation claimed to have revealed the real name of the world-famous anonymous street artist.
According to a report by Reuters journalists, the Bristol-based graffiti artist could be Robin Gunningham, 51, who allegedly later used the name David Jones to avoid identification. The investigation relied on travel records, photographs from former associates and documents linked to a past arrest.
Denial from artist’s legal team
Banksy’s lawyer, Mark Stephens, rejected the claims, saying the artist does not accept that many of the details in the report are correct. He added that revealing Banksy’s identity could violate the artist’s privacy and place him in danger.
Stephens said anonymity allows artists to express views freely without fear of retaliation, censorship or prosecution, stressing that working under a pseudonym serves an important social purpose.
Decades of speculation
Banksy’s identity has been the subject of speculation for years, with theories suggesting the artist could be musician Robert Del Naja, illustrator Jamie Hewlett, television presenter Neil Buchanan, or even a collective rather than a single person.
Banksy rose to fame through satirical street art across the UK and worldwide, often carrying political or anti-establishment messages. One of the most famous works, Girl With Balloon, made headlines in 2018 when it partially shredded itself after being sold at auction, later renamed Love Is In The Bin.
Mystery remains part of the appeal
Despite repeated claims over the years, the true Banksy identity has never been officially confirmed. Many observers argue that the mystery itself is part of the artist’s influence, allowing the work to speak louder than the person behind it.
