Supreme Court lifts Sizopoulos parliamentary immunity

Date:

Supreme Court decision on immunity

The Sizopoulos immunity lift was issued by the Supreme Court on Monday after hearing an application submitted by the Attorney General of the Republic of Cyprus.

The Court ruled that the legal conditions for lifting the parliamentary immunity of MP and former EDEK president Marinos Sizopoulos had been met, allowing authorities to proceed with investigations.

Evidence presented before the Court

In its ruling, the Court stated that the material placed before it, including key findings from the report of the Independent Authority Against Corruption, as well as testimony linking the respondent to the offences under investigation, justified the removal of immunity.

The decision clears the way for possible criminal investigation procedures to continue without the constitutional protection granted to members of parliament.

Case linked to TAXAN share sale

The case concerns the sale of shares of TAXAN Properties Developers Ltd to an Iraqi investor, a matter that returned to the spotlight following new complaints submitted to the Independent Authority Against Corruption by former EDEK MP Giorgos Varnava.

Following the complaint, the Authority appointed two officials to examine the case. In a report sent to the Attorney General on 11 September 2025, the Authority recommended that Sizopoulos be investigated for possible offences including fraud, forgery, preparation of a forged document, circulation of a forged document, and conspiracy to defraud.
