Missile fragments recovered from the February 28 strike on Shajareh Tayyiba Elementary School appear to be from a US Tomahawk cruise missile, according to analysis by CNN. The strike killed at least 168 children and 14 teachers, according to Iranian state media.
Four photographs of the fragments were shared by Iran’s state broadcaster IRIB, showing remnants such as a satellite data link antenna and an actuator motor marked “Made in USA” from Ohio-based Globe Motors. Experts, including former US Army explosive ordnance personnel and researchers from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, confirmed that the debris is consistent with components of Tomahawk missiles, precision-guided munitions used exclusively by the US and select allies.
Video analysis further suggests that a Tomahawk targeted a nearby IRGC naval base, which is adjacent to the school. Satellite imagery and geolocated videos corroborate the presence of US strikes in the area on the same day. Former Pentagon adviser Wes Bryant described the use of such weapons near a school as “a troubling departure from foundational US targeting doctrine and practices,” highlighting failures in civilian protection.
Despite mounting evidence, US President Donald Trump denied US involvement, incorrectly claiming Iran possessed Tomahawk missiles. The White House has indicated that the Pentagon will release its investigation into the strike.
