The Turkish Cypriot leader, Tufan Erhürman, has called on the European Union to take a clear stance on the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI), a proposed underwater electricity cable linking Greece, Cyprus, and Israel.
In a social media post, Erhürman argued that the EU must decide whether to support a project that promotes mutual interdependence and contributes to resolving the Cyprus issue, or a project that, in his view, further complicates the situation. He noted that the economic feasibility of the project has been questioned in various studies, and discussions continue over whether it should proceed.
Despite the EU’s expressed support for the GSI, Erhürman and his political team have advocated over the past three years for an alternative solution: an electricity interconnection linking Cyprus with Turkey and Greece. “If the European Union truly desires a solution to the Cyprus issue, it must decide whether to back a project that facilitates resolution through mutual interdependence or one that complicates matters,” he said.
Erhürman added that he and his team have communicated this position to all relevant stakeholders over the past three years and intend to continue doing so as part of their commitment to achieving a resolution to the Cyprus issue.
