Turkey has deployed an anti-drone system at the Ercan (Tymbou) airport in occupied Cyprus to protect its six F-16 fighter jets, according to reports. The system, known as the “Şahin Physical Destruction System,” was developed by Turkish defence company ASELSAN and delivered to the pseudo-state’s units by the Turkish Ministry of National Defence in January.
The 40mm system reportedly uses smart munitions to neutralise aerial threats, enhancing the protection of Turkish forces stationed in the area. Turkish authorities are said to have prepared for months to strengthen air defence capabilities, addressing potential air threats to their deployed aircraft.
Reports of broader air defence integration
Turkish media also suggest that the region may be incorporated into Turkey’s wider air defence network, though there has been no official confirmation from Ankara. For security reasons, Turkey does not disclose the weapon systems deployed in northern Cyprus.
Earlier in January, Greek Cypriot media claimed that northern Cyprus had been included in Turkey’s multi-layered national air defence system, “Iron Dome,” and that locally produced “HİSAR” missile launchers had been deployed in Kyrenia. These claims remain neither confirmed nor denied.
