Weeks of preparation condensed into days
HMS Dragon, a Portsmouth-based Type 45 destroyer, was expected to deploy to Cyprus last week to bolster the defence of a British military base against potential Iranian attacks. However, the ship remains docked, with sources indicating it may take another five days to reach its destination. Defence officials say crews have worked tirelessly, compressing a six-week readiness process into just six days.
Maintenance and readiness issues
Experts explain that while a destroyer in high readiness can deploy in under five days, HMS Dragon was in dry dock undergoing scheduled repairs. This delayed departure sparked speculation that HMS Duncan might be sent instead, but domestic defence needs and limited resources meant it remained in UK waters.
Complex operational preparations
Ready-for-deployment procedures required undocking the ship, loading ammunition and supplies, reconfiguring equipment for its new mission, and taking on approximately 80 crates of food. Systems such as the Sea Viper air defence, capable of targeting 16 missiles or drones simultaneously, had to be fully operational. About 200 personnel, including potential Royal Marines and special forces, will accompany the vessel.
External factors and staffing
Union concerns over a new Serco contract affecting tugboat and engineering staff arose, though both Serco and the Ministry of Defence denied any delays. Foggy weather, re-rolling the ship for a different mission, and ensuring paperwork and certifications were complete all contributed to the extended timeline.
Strategic pressures on the Royal Navy
Naval experts note that deep cuts have left the Royal Navy in a constrained position. The need to keep some destroyers in UK waters for air defence highlights the balancing act between international obligations and domestic security.
