Paphos tourism outlook remains positive despite challenges

Date:

The tourism outlook remains optimistic, with potential losses in the current period expected to be offset in the coming months, according to Michalis Mitas, President of the Paphos Tourism Development and Promotion Company (ETAP).

He emphasised that despite current regional challenges, Cyprus continues to be a safe and fully operational tourist destination, and efforts are underway to secure rebookings in the weeks ahead.

Strategic plans for 2026

Looking ahead, ETAP Paphos aims to further enhance the quality and sustainable maturity of the region’s tourism product. Key strategic goals include diversifying air connections, ensuring stable year-round flights, and promoting thematic tourism sectors.

Focus on thematic tourism

Special emphasis is placed on developing sports tourism, weddings, wellness, agrotourism, and tourism for visitors over 55. Visitor experiences are also being improved through eco-trails, walking paths, interactive activities, and attracting international sporting and cultural events.

Digital upgrades and accessibility

Digital enhancement of the destination and improved accessibility for people with disabilities are priorities for 2026–2028. Initiatives will include evaluating current conditions and planning targeted actions, alongside strengthening rural tourism, particularly around Polis Chrysochous.

Challenges facing Paphos tourism

Seasonality remains a major challenge, despite efforts to reduce its impact. Other significant issues include limited public transport, especially connecting urban centres to rural areas, workforce shortages, water scarcity, and high operational costs.

Additionally, inconsistencies in service quality, limited use of technology by some providers, and ageing hotel and urban infrastructure in inland areas and Polis Chrysochous affect the destination’s competitiveness, highlighting the need for coordinated interventions in the coming years.
