Larnaca: 37-Year-Old injures two police officers while attempting to flee

Date:

At around 10:30 p.m. yesterday, members of the Emergency Response Unit (MMAD) were on patrol in an area of Larnaca when they noticed a suspicious man looking inside parked vehicles.

Police officers approached the suspect to carry out a check. However, as soon as he noticed them, he got into a car in an attempt to flee.

Officers ordered him to stop for inspection, but the suspect started the vehicle and reversed, crashing into a parked car.

At that point, a member of MMAD opened the door of the suspect’s vehicle in an attempt to stop him. The suspect suddenly accelerated, hitting the officer in the leg and then crashing into an Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) pole and the right side of the MMAD patrol vehicle.

As a result of the collision with the patrol car, a police officer who was in the driver’s seat of the patrol vehicle was injured.

After the suspect’s vehicle came to a stop, an MMAD officer arrested him. During the arrest, the suspect shouted and attempted to punch the officer in the face.

The suspect was identified as a 37-year-old man. He underwent a drug-driving test, which returned a positive preliminary result.

During a search of his vehicle, police found two knives, one of which was a folding knife.

The two injured police officers were taken to Larnaca General Hospital, where they received medical examinations and treatment and were granted sick leave.

This morning, the Larnaca District Court issued a five-day detention order against the 37-year-old for the investigation of offences including reckless and negligent acts, assault, carrying knives, careless driving, driving under the influence of drugs, resisting lawful arrest, and other offences.

The Larnaca Central Police Station and the Larnaca Traffic Department are continuing the investigation.
