Dendias visits Cyprus, underlines Greece-Cyprus cooperation

Date:

The Cyprus-Greece defence cooperation has been reinforced as the two countries respond to the ongoing Middle East crisis. President Nikos Christodoulides welcomed Greek Defence Minister Nikos Dendias to the Presidential Palace in Nicosia, highlighting the commitment of both nations to act as part of the solution during this challenging period.

Greece’s rapid response

President Christodoulides thanked Greece for its immediate support, describing it as both significant and symbolic. He noted that Greece’s prompt action sets an example for the European Union, encouraging other member states to follow suit. Christodoulides emphasised that Cyprus remains a responsible actor, focused on safety, humanitarian efforts, and regional stability.

Greek military reinforcement

Minister Dendias confirmed Greece’s commitment to Cyprus, highlighting the deployment of two pairs of F-16 fighter jets and two Greek Navy frigates to bolster the island’s defence. One frigate, “Psara”, is equipped with the UAV defence system “Kentavros,” developed in Greece and successfully tested in European operations, while the “Kimon” frigate represents the most advanced vessel in the Greek fleet.

Coordinated security measures

Cypriot Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas stressed that Cyprus continues to act within international law and maintains its non-involvement in military operations against Iran. The joint efforts with Greece aim to safeguard the island, its citizens, and regional stability.

European and international support

Palmas also noted that other European and allied countries have responded to Cyprus’ security needs, illustrating the broader cooperation framework while reaffirming Greece’s unique role as a historic and strategic partner.

Strategic message

Both leaders reaffirmed the principle that Cyprus and Greece will face challenges together, with defence, diplomacy, and strategic alliances underpinning their shared commitment to peace, stability, and the protection of their citizens in an increasingly volatile regional context.
