France sends missile, anti-drone systems, and frigate to Cyprus

Date:

France and Germany are sending military support to Cyprus, including anti-drone systems, air defence units, and frigates, following recent security developments.

President Nikos Christodoulides received confirmation early Tuesday from French President Emmanuel Macron. The two leaders had spoken twice by phone on Monday, during which President Christodoulides formally requested assistance.

French support

President Macron confirmed that France will send anti-drone systems, air defence units, and one frigate to Cyprus. A second frigate is expected to follow shortly, further boosting the island’s defensive capabilities.

The deployment reflects France’s commitment to regional security and support for Cyprus amid rising threats.

German assistance

President Christodoulides also requested German support from Chancellor Friedrich Merz in a phone call on Monday. Chancellor Merz responded positively, and the German government is expected to approve the deployment of additional military aid to Cyprus imminently.

The combined assistance from France and Germany underscores the strengthened security cooperation within the EU in response to regional tensions.
