Schools shut after Akrotiri drone incident

Precautionary measures following drone crash

Schools in parts of Limassol district will remain shut as a precaution following the Akrotiri drone incident, an official source from the Ministry of Education confirmed.

According to the same source, the decision was taken after a drone crashed within the area of the Akrotiri Base. Authorities stressed that the measures are purely preventive and aimed at safeguarding students and staff.

Personnel at the base received instructions to move away from windows and take cover behind protective structures as sirens sounded across the wider Limassol area. Authorities confirmed that primary schools in Akrotiri, Asomatos, Trachoni and Episkopi will remain closed today as a precaution.

Which schools are affected

As reported by the television programme Protoselido, secondary schools in Trachoni and Episkopi will remain closed.

In addition, primary schools in Akrotiri, Asomatos, Trachoni, and Episkopi will not operate.

The Ministry clarified that these steps were implemented solely in response to the Akrotiri drone incident and do not stem from any immediate threat to public safety.

Student safety arrangements in place

Officials further explained that if students have already arrived at their school units, procedures are in place to ensure their smooth and safe return home.

Where necessary, students may remain within school premises under the supervision of teachers until further instructions are issued.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation and are expected to provide updates as needed.

Evacuations and limited damage

Several residents evacuated their homes and spent the night at the Limassol National Guard Camp (KEN). Officials reported no injuries.

British media indicated that the Akrotiri drone attack caused limited material damage within the airport perimeter. London announced it will temporarily relocate non-essential personnel from the base for precautionary reasons.
