LGBTQIA+ medical registry launched in Cyprus

Date:

Members of the LGBTQIA+ community can now access a new LGBTQIA+ medical registry listing queer-friendly healthcare professionals across Cyprus, the Queer Collective announced on Wednesday.

Community directory for inclusive care

Describing the initiative as a “community directory”, the Queer Collective said the registry aims to make it easier for people to find doctors, therapists and specialists who treat LGBTQIA+ individuals with dignity and respect.

“Finding a doctor, therapist, or specialist who will treat you with dignity is harder than it should be in Cyprus,” the group stated.

The organisation said community members recommended the listed professionals as inclusive and non-discriminatory.

Initial list of specialists

The LGBTQIA+ medical registry currently includes ten doctors across various specialisations. These include personal doctors, gynaecologists, a urologist and a psychiatrist.

The Queer Collective noted that sexual orientation and gender identity can be relevant to mental and sexual health, but stressed that respectful treatment in any medical setting remains essential.

“Seeking medical services often puts you in a vulnerable position,” one queer reader said. “It’s not only about if or how my queerness affects my health status, it’s also about feeling safe when visiting a doctor.”

The reader added that although conditions in Cyprus have improved in recent years, experiences of queerphobia and homophobia persist, making trusted healthcare providers particularly important.

Based on community recommendations

The Queer Collective clarified that the registry relies on community recommendations. The group said it cannot guarantee the quality of services or independently verify professional credentials.

“We welcome you to contribute by submitting a recommendation or sharing your experience,” the group stated on its website.

The Community Directory is available through the Queer Collective’s online platforms.
