President Christodoulides requests March meeting with Guterres

Date:

President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, confirmed that he held an open and constructive meeting with the Turkish Cypriot leader, Tufan Erhürman, focusing on confidence-building measures and the path forward for substantive negotiations.

Confidence-building measures discussed

During the meeting, the leaders reviewed progress on all confidence-building measures and identified areas requiring further guidance for the negotiators. President Christodoulides noted that discussions included proposals for checkpoints, including the Ledra Street crossing, and the four other crossing points, to advance practical cooperation between communities.

Substantive issues addressed

The leaders exchanged views on key aspects of the Cyprus issue, covering relevant negotiation chapters. Christodoulides confirmed that the meeting reaffirmed political equality in line with UN Security Council resolutions, and aimed at creating conditions for the resumption of substantive talks on a two-state federation framework.

He emphasised that the discussion remained focused on objectives, without diverting into blame or side issues, and that further meetings will follow to advance dialogue.

Next steps

Christodoulides also indicated that he has formally requested a meeting with the UN Secretary-General in March and plans to convene the National Council for updates and consultation on the situation. No joint statement will be issued from this meeting.
