ON THIS DAY: Scientists discover Zealandia, the hidden continent (2017)

Date:

A team of geologists has confirmed the existence of a largely submerged continent in the South Pacific, known as Zealandia. The discovery, published in the research journal GSA Today, provides new insight into Earth’s geological history and challenges traditional notions of continental boundaries.

What is Zealandia?

Zealandia spans approximately 4.9 million square kilometres, making it nearly half the size of Australia. Despite its size, around 94% of the landmass lies underwater, with only New Zealand and New Caledonia rising above the ocean surface. Scientists now classify Zealandia as a continent due to its distinct geology, elevation, and crust thickness.

Evidence supporting the discovery

Researchers relied on a combination of satellite data, seismic surveys, and rock sampling to map Zealandia’s submerged terrain. Findings show a continuous continental crust separate from Australia, supporting the idea that Zealandia once formed part of the supercontinent Gondwana before breaking away around 85 million years ago.

Implications for geology

The recognition of Zealandia as a continent alters our understanding of plate tectonics and continental drift. Geologists hope the discovery will lead to further studies of hidden continental fragments and improve predictions of seismic and volcanic activity in the South Pacific region.

Future research

Ongoing exploration of Zealandia’s submerged areas may reveal new species, unique ecosystems, and mineral resources. Scientists emphasise the importance of underwater geological mapping in uncovering other potentially hidden continents.

The announcement of Zealandia confirms that the Earth’s surface holds more surprises than previously thought, highlighting the dynamic nature of our planet.
