Tragic avalanche in Val d’Isere
Two British skiers, Stuart Leslie and Shaun Overy, were killed in an avalanche at the French Alps resort of Val d’Isere last week. A French national also lost their life in the snow slide. The tragedy occurred despite a red avalanche warning issued by Meteo-France for the Savoie region the previous day.
Avalanche warning and conditions
Meteo-France had warned of “very heavy snowfall” creating “exceptional avalanche conditions” and advised extreme caution for all mountain activities. The risk level was scored four out of five.
Victims and circumstances
The British skiers were part of a group of five with a professional instructor, who reportedly did not see the avalanche approaching. The French victim was skiing alone higher up the mountain. An inquiry into the incident has been launched, and the Foreign Office confirmed the deaths, offering consular assistance.
Recent context
The deaths come just a month after another British skier was killed in a separate avalanche in the French Alps. Friends of the victims paid tribute, highlighting Stuart Leslie’s love for life and adventurous spirit.
