Five dead after Spain apartment fire

Date:

At least five people have died and five others were injured in a fire at a five-storey apartment building in Manlleu, in northeast Spain. Emergency services reported that the blaze began in a storage room in the attic.

Cause and victims

The cause of the fire is not yet known. Authorities said the victims, who have not been identified, were unable to escape from the attic storage area. Catalan police confirmed that all five deceased were young people and did not reside in the building.

Injuries and evacuations

Four of the injured were later discharged from hospitals, while one did not require hospital treatment. Three families were temporarily relocated to a nearby hotel, with the remaining residents returning to the building once safety measures were in place, according to the General Directorate of Civil Protection in Catalonia.

Authorities’ response

Ambulances and psychological support teams were deployed to assist those affected. Catalonia’s regional leader, Salvador Illa, expressed his deep sorrow over the deaths. Catalan police have opened an investigation into the cause of the fire.
