Gaza: 12 killed in Israeli airstrikes

Date:

Israeli airstrikes in the Gaza Strip killed at least 12 people on Sunday, the local civil protection service, affiliated with Hamas, reported. The Israeli military said the strikes targeted armed militants who allegedly violated the ceasefire agreement in place since October 10, 2025.

Casualties and locations

According to the Gaza civil protection, five people were killed in Jabalia in the north, another five in Khan Yunis in the south, and two more in Gaza City and Beit Lahia. Hospitals Sifa in Gaza City and Nasser in Khan Yunis confirmed receiving seven bodies.

Witnesses reported that civilians, including children, were among the dead, with some killed in makeshift tents in displacement camps.

Israel-Hamas ceasefire disputes

The Israeli military stated that the strikes were conducted after armed militants emerged from underground facilities in Beit Hanoun, constituting a “blatant violation” of the ceasefire. Hamas condemned the strikes, describing attacks on displaced persons in tents as a serious breach of the truce.

Despite ongoing near-daily exchanges of fire, the US announced in mid-February the launch of the second phase of President Donald Trump’s plan, aiming to end the conflict. The plan involves Israeli troop withdrawal, Hamas disarmament – which Hamas rejects – the deployment of an international stabilisation force, and reconstruction.

Trump’s intervention

President Trump called for the “full and immediate” disarmament of Hamas and announced that $5 billion in aid will be allocated for Gaza’s reconstruction.

Humanitarian crisis

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) confirmed in late January that it suspended non-essential operations at Nasser Hospital due to the presence of armed individuals. Hamas denies using hospitals for military purposes, while Israel maintains that the hospital is being used as a militant base.

Since the ceasefire in October, 601 Palestinians have been killed, according to Hamas health authorities, with the UN confirming the numbers as credible. Israel reports four military fatalities. After more than four months of truce, Gaza remains in a severe humanitarian crisis.
