Foreign inmates granted presidential pardon, immediate deportation

Date:

The Ministry of Justice announced that eleven foreign inmates have been granted a presidential pardon under the condition of immediate removal from Cyprus. Their release and deportation were carried out on Friday under the instructions of Minister Konstantinos Fytiris.

Part of broader prison decongestion policy

According to the Ministry, the pardons align with a wider government policy to reduce prison overcrowding, as announced by the President of the Republic. The measure is implemented in the public interest and follows directives from the Minister of Justice and Public Order to the relevant authorities.

The released foreign inmates, who were already scheduled for release in 2026, were deported immediately and added to the government’s stop list to prevent re-entry into Cyprus.

Policy rationale

The Ministry emphasised that the decision forms part of a coherent set of measures to address chronic prison overpopulation, fully respecting the rule of law and prioritising public safety.
