Cabinet approves financial support for sheep and goat farming

Date:

The Cabinet has approved financial aid for Cyprus’s goat and sheep farming sector, aiming to encourage modern reproductive management practices and strengthen the sustainability of farms.

The €1.5 million support targets eligible farms with at least 200 female animals aged ten months or older. Each application must cover a minimum of 50 eligible animals per farm. Beneficiaries must also hold a “Certificate of Registration for Animal Food Facilities,” and their milk production must be recorded in the Agriculture Department’s Raw Milk Tracking platform.

Encouraging modern practices

The initiative promotes techniques such as hormonal oestrus synchronization to improve animal productivity, reduce seasonality in milk production, and enhance overall farm efficiency.

Supporting PDO halloumi production

The decision also aims to support producers contributing to Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) halloumi, strengthening the sector’s competitiveness. It forms part of broader policies to support primary production, rural economy, and sustainable development of Cyprus’s agricultural sector.
