Water supply cut 10% to conserve, no household cuts

Date:

The Water Development Department (WDD) clarified that reports claiming a 10% reduction in water supply automatically leads to widespread household cut-offs do not reflect the purpose of the measure or reality.

No scheduled household cut-offs

The Department emphasised that the decision does not create a schedule for water supply to households and does not limit supply to specific days or hours. The 10% reduction applies to the total water delivered from WDD to District Municipalities and Communities. Officials describe the measure as preventive, aimed at maintaining reserves and avoiding stricter interventions in the future.

The WDD stated that the reduction targets overconsumption and unnecessary water use. It is not intended to implement water cuts at the household level but to manage demand proactively.

Managing water resources during drought

Reports estimating that the 10% reduction corresponds to roughly 10 million cubic metres of water across Cyprus reflect the critical role of this measure in keeping the water system functional throughout 2026. The WDD noted that demand management measures like this are applied internationally during prolonged dry periods.

Responsible water use

The department stressed that early action allows milder management of the situation, reducing the risk of more extensive interventions later. Cooperation continues with District Municipalities to monitor and manage supplies. Officials also reminded the public that if each consumer reduces daily consumption by about 10%, the impact on daily life will remain limited. Responsible water use is essential to ensure smooth water supply in the coming months.
