Paphos Town Hall guarded overnight; Phedonos suspended

Date:

Police remained outside Paphos Town Hall throughout the night following developments concerning Paphos Mayor Phedonas Phedonos, who, as announced by the Interior Ministry, stands automatically suspended from today until investigations conclude and the cases under examination reach court.

On Wednesday afternoon, Phedonos went to the Town Hall to collect personal belongings, while police maintained a discreet presence outside the building.

Deputy mayor assumes duties

Following the latest developments, Paphos Deputy Mayor Angelos Onisiforou has assumed leadership of the municipality. In a statement yesterday, Onisiforou said the municipality continues and will continue to operate normally without any disruption, stressing that serving residents remains the municipal authority’s highest priority.

Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou, who had been abroad, was expected to return on Wednesday evening and approve today the relevant notification concerning the Paphos mayor suspended decision for publication in an extraordinary issue of the Official Gazette of the Republic.

Investigations ongoing

Police investigative work regarding complaints against the mayor remains in progress. Police Headquarters spokesperson Vyronas Vyronos said investigators have taken certain statements, formed an investigative team and are evaluating the available evidence, adding that the team will determine the course of the inquiry.

Police Communication Branch officer Marina Christodoulidou also confirmed that investigative work continues into the case concerning the Paphos mayor suspended development.

Asked whether any individual would be called to give a statement, Christodoulidou clarified that this depends solely on the investigators, who assess all testimony and the direction of the investigation.

Regarding the offences under examination, she said police are investigating serious offences without providing further details.
