Wave of various complaints against Cypriot politicians

Date:

A wave of political corruption claims and allegations emerging over the past 24 hours has shaken the Cypriot political system. Society has watched in shock as videos allegedly exposing corruption mechanisms in the Presidential Palace surfaced, alongside reports of assaults and sexual offences involving elected officials.

Authorities face mounting pressure

According to Sigma’s reporting, authorities are under immense pressure as citizens and political parties await the findings of investigations into these claims. Recent controversies include a widely circulated video alleging corruption in the Presidential Palace, the ongoing probe into MEP Fidias Panayiotou, and a complaint against DISY MP Nikos Sykas over assault.

Mayor of Paphos under scrutiny

The case of the Mayor of Paphos has also entered the spotlight. Political parties have repeatedly issued statements urging thorough investigations. Yesterday, DISY President Annita Dimitriou called for all cases to be fully examined, without exceptions, including online claims. She highlighted that complainants are ready to submit evidence to the authorities, stressing that the accumulation of unresolved allegations is unjustified.

TikToker’s allegations spark debate

The President’s comments targeted claims made daily by TikToker Ioanna Fotiou, who presents supporting evidence in her videos. An international arrest warrant has been issued against her for allegedly publishing false news and harassment, following multiple complaints.

One complaint came from DISY MP Charalambos Pazaros, who reported the TikToker, known as Annie Alexoui, to the Paphos Police last summer. Recently, the MP attempted to withdraw his complaint, but the police informed him that withdrawal was impossible due to the international warrant. He has sent a letter seeking approval from the Attorney General.

MP explains withdrawal reasons

The MP clarified his decision, stating: “She is not a criminal. On the contrary, according to her posts, she is a victim of crimes that I believe must be examined without delay. The state and its institutions must allow Ioanna to present any evidence she has against anyone.”

Ioanna thanked the MP on Facebook, confirming that any disputes between them were resolved. She had previously posted serious allegations against various individuals, including the DISY MP, but continues to publish videos alleging corruption within the police force. She questions whether authorities are properly assessing her complaints, claiming some officers are involved in the crimes she reports.

MEP Fidias Panayiotou under EU investigation

Meanwhile, MEP Fidias Panayiotou remains under investigation by the European Public Prosecutor for alleged misuse of public funds. Documents published by Cyprus Times reveal that the villa he rents in Kato Polemidia, Limassol, for €2,300 includes a strict clause restricting its use to residential purposes. The villa has four bedrooms and a swimming pool.

At the same time, a new complaint was filed against Panayiotou regarding a possible breach of personal data. The complaint relates to a video in which the MEP referred to individuals with intellectual disabilities using a derogatory term. The athlete featured in the video requested via KYSOA that his image be removed, but this request was not implemented.
