Cyprus TOM warns of dangerous replacement airbags

Date:

US accidents trigger urgent warning

The Cyprus Road Transport Department (TOM) has issued a warning about dangerous and illegal Chinese-made replacement airbags, following fatal and serious accidents in the United States.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported ten crashes in the US where airbags manufactured by Jilin Province Detiannuo Automobile Safety System Co (DTN) failed, causing deaths or serious injuries.

Risks associated with the airbags

These replacement airbags, often fitted after prior collisions, may fail during impact. The airbags can rupture, sending metal fragments into vehicle occupants, potentially causing serious injury or death.

Advice to importers and sellers

The Road Transport Department urges all importers and sellers who may have distributed these airbags in Cyprus to report the products immediately. They must take all necessary measures to recall them in line with legislation.

Engineers and body repair specialists must maintain records of any vehicle modifications under the relevant law.

Guidance for consumers

Consumers who possess these replacement airbags should contact their mechanic, body shop, or seller to check and return the products.

If an importer or seller refuses to cooperate, consumers can file a written complaint with the Consumer Protection Service via www.consumer.gov.cy.

Ongoing monitoring and updates

The Road Transport Department will update the Electromechanical Services Department to inform the registry of mechanics and body repairers. It will also notify POVEK and the Consumer Protection Service.

Authorities will monitor developments through the EU Safety Gate early warning system and provide further announcements and public information campaigns if necessary.

Currently, there is no indication that these airbags exist in Cyprus.

For more information, consumers can contact the Road Transport Department at 22600500 or via [email protected].
