Disabled groups criticise Fidias Panayiotou apology

Statement from KYSOA

The Cypriot Confederation of Organisations of Disabled People (KYSOA) has strongly criticised the recent apology of MEP Fidias Panayiotou, calling it offensive not only to decades of advocacy but also to the institutional role of an MEP.

In a press release, KYSOA stated that Panayiotou’s attribution of human rights advocacy to political motives raises concerns about his understanding of human rights and activism. The joint complaint by KYSOA and the European Disability Forum has already been submitted to the President of the European Parliament.

Criticism of Panayiotou’s comments

The press release emphasises that the statement is “a necessary response, without political motive, only political advocacy.” KYSOA added that it has no intention to “steal votes” from Panayiotou, unless the MEP considers his video clips part of an election campaign for the 2029 European elections.

KYSOA further noted that Panayiotou’s recent television statements show he still fails to grasp the severity of his unacceptable behaviour. According to the Confederation, his claim that various institutions – including the European Parliament Intergroup on Disability, the European Disability Forum, the Cypriot National Paralympic Committee, KYSOA, the broader disability movement, and the Commissioners for Human Rights and the Rights of the Child – have political motives aimed at reducing his votes is entirely unfounded.

Political nature of disability rights advocacy

The Confederation stressed that every politically exposed person should understand and respect a basic principle: advocating for the rights of persons with disabilities is a political act. When expressed by the disability movement, it constitutes an act of self-representation, collective advocacy, and social justice.
