Alma: ELAM is running a candidate who has a past felony record

Movement highlights far-right influence

The ALMA movement criticised the Christodoulides government for its “political tolerance and silence” towards the far-right party ELAM, stating it encourages the party’s political audacity.

“Christodoulides’ government appears politically dependent on ELAM’s support, which has evolved into a systemic and political pillar of this administration,” ALMA said in a statement.

Concerns over candidates with criminal past

ALMA raised further concerns over ELAM including candidates with criminal records on its election lists. “Even if a convicted person has formally regained their rights due to the passage of time, their inclusion raises serious political questions about ties between this political space and elements linked to the mafia. Just because something is not legally objectionable does not make it politically acceptable,” the movement said.

ALMA added, “Democracy must not be intimidated. The attempt to integrate such elements politically has no place in Cyprus. Politicising fascist tendencies under the guise of pseudo-patriotism threatens society’s sense of security. Government silence must not dominate.”

ELAM responds

ELAM responded, defending its candidate and criticising ALMA. It highlighted that Odysseas Michaelides, ALMA’s leader, “was appointed and promoted through patronage, supposedly fought corruption, and was unanimously convicted by the Supreme Court (8-0).”

The ELAM statement further claims that Michaelides’ former associate revealed he orchestrated attacks against journalists who disagreed with him. ELAM criticised him for receiving preferential treatment, avoiding justice, and now publicly condemning others.

ELAM also pointed to internal questions raised about transparency in ALMA, including funding and contributions, and challenged Michaelides to clarify his intentions before the upcoming elections regarding cooperation with those he previously labelled corrupt.
