Interior Ministry considers administrative leave for Phedonos

Date:

The Ministry of Interior sent a formal letter to the Police asking for an update on the ex officio investigation into Paphos Mayor, Phedonas Phedonos. The inquiry follows public concern over online posts alleging spousal abuse, which the mayor and his wife have publicly denied.

Fileleftheros” reports that the Ministry wants to determine whether the alleged offences fall under Article 113 of the Municipal Law. If they do, authorities could initiate proceedings to suspend the mayor. The Police have not yet responded, and officials are considering coordination with the Law Office.

Police actively investigating

Police continue to investigate the allegations, collecting statements and examining evidence. Christodoulos Konsolos, Communications Officer at the Police Headquarters, told CNA: “We have been investigating since last Sunday. Officers are taking statements and evaluating evidence linked to the alleged abuse.”

The investigation focuses on obtaining testimonies from involved parties and reviewing submitted documents.

The probe began after Ioanna Fotiou (Annie Alexui) posted material on social media, including documents presented as hospital records that allegedly involve the mayor.

Mayor responds to allegations

Mayor Phedonos described the allegations as part of a “relentless campaign” by a “political and economic conspiracy and organised crime” aimed at harming him personally and professionally.

Despite the controversy, the mayor welcomed the investigation, calling it a chance to restore his reputation. His wife publicly confirmed she was not a victim of abuse and does not feel fear.
