Owners unite over rent increases
Owners of Turkish Cypriot commercial properties have joined forces to protest steep rent increases caused by recent amendments to property legislation. They plan to meet authorities to present their concerns.
Kyriakos Moustakas, Central Organizer of POVEK, told CNA that the situation has caused major unrest. “If authorities do not respond, we will organize mobilizations,” he said.
Letters sent to key officials
The newly formed committee of displaced managers of Turkish Cypriot commercial properties sent letters last Monday. Recipients included the President, the Interior Minister, the Parliamentary Committee on Refugees, and the Pan-Cyprian Refugee Union.
Law amendment sparks uproar
The committee stated that the amendment to the Turkish Cypriot Properties (Management and Other Matters) (Temporary Provisions) Law of 1991 (139/1991), RAA 230/2025 created major disruption among property owners.
Affected owners want direct meetings with authorities. The committee stressed, “These are people who lost their properties without compensation for the loss of use.”
Current rent burden
Owners now must pay market rent for properties and spaces they developed themselves and used to run businesses that ensured their survival.
Committee ready to present detailed memorandum
Kyriakos Moustakas said the committee will submit a detailed memorandum explaining, article by article, its objections to the law amendment. He warned, “If authorities do not respond, we will decide on mobilization measures for all affected owners.”
