Injured PAOK fan: “The steering wheel locked during overtaking”

Date:

Seven fans of Greek football club PAOK died and three were injured in a devastating road crash in Romania while traveling from Greece to Lyon, France, to watch their team. The accident occurred on DN6-E70 near Lugoj, Timiș County.

A dashcam from a truck captured the incident. It shows the PAOK fans’ black van overtaking the truck, moving into the right lane, then suddenly veering into oncoming traffic and colliding head-on with another truck. Objects inside the van were thrown violently during the crash.

Survivor’s account

One of the injured PAOK fans reportedly told Greek doctor Dimitris Koukoulas, who arrived at the scene, that the steering “stuck during the overtaking due to lane assistance.” The doctor, speaking on ERT, said he remains shaken by the scene and spent time with the mother of one of the critically injured victims.

The survivor’s claim will be verified, as lane-assist systems automatically disengage when the driver signals a lane change. Video footage indicates the driver had used the turn signal, meaning the system should not have pulled the vehicle back into the lane if it functioned normally.

Investigation ongoing

Authorities continue to investigate the crash, including potential technical or human factors. Dashcam evidence provides crucial insight into the sequence of events leading to the fatal collision.
