Former Bishop Tychikos clarifies living conditions & salary reduction

Date:

Lawyer addresses recent reports

The lawyer of the former Bishop of Paphos, Tychikos, issued a statement responding to recent media reports. Lawyer Irineos Antoniou Giakoumakis, on behalf of M.Ch. Mylonas & Partners, said the bishop does not live in the Paphos Diocese residence but in a small room within the diocesan garden.

Living arrangements and personal expenses

Giakoumakis emphasized that the bishop occupies only a small room containing his personal belongings. He does not use diocesan offices or administrative spaces, and the Diocese bears no costs for his food or care.

Salary reduction concerns

The lawyer noted that the former bishop’s salary decreased by 55% without a decision from the Holy Synod, raising questions about legality and pastoral sensitivity. He added that the bishop’s health is fragile, and the Archbishop showed no substantial concern for the bishop’s living conditions or care.

Communication practices questioned

Giakoumakis also criticized the Archbishop for informing clergy about Synod activities through media reports rather than personal or official invitations, a practice the lawyer described as inconsistent with Church order, ethos, and canonical tradition.

Commitment to unity and truth

The former bishop Tychikos, Giakoumakis stressed, does not seek conflict. He seeks to restore the truth, protect Church unity, and uphold justice, transparency, and respect for institutions.

Appeal to media

The lawyer urged media outlets to act responsibly, verify information, and avoid publishing reports that harm individuals or institutions. “Truth does not need exaggeration; it needs light,” he said.
