Unsafe conditions at Athalassa Hospital, call for urgent action

Date:

The Mental Health Nursing Staff Branch of PASYDY issued a statement warning that recent evaluations have deemed that the conditions of the wards at Athalassa Hospital unsafe and requiring demolition. The branch urged the State, the Ministry of Health, and OKYPY to take immediate action to ensure both patient safety and dignified care, as well as to protect staff working under extremely difficult conditions.

Situation reaches critical point

“For us, the employees at Athalassa Hospital, the situation has reached its limits,” the branch said. “We have reached a breaking point. All parties involved must either make the necessary decisions for meaningful improvements or leave the hospital, patients, and staff in the current tragic state, with all the consequences this entails.”

Shortcomings in past renovations

The branch noted that after years of pressure, authorities decided to renovate two hospital wards at a multi-million-euro cost. However, just eight years later, these wards are also deemed unsuitable.

Staff highlighted that this raises serious concerns regarding public money management and the complete lack of a long-term strategy for planning and developing mental health services.

No updates on Phase B of hospital project

One year ago, three state-of-the-art buildings marked the completion of Phase A of the new Athalassa Hospital project. During the inauguration, the President of the Republic announced that Phase B, concerning the construction of the new hospital, would begin immediately. Staff now report that authorities have provided no official update on the start date or timeline for Phase B implementation and completion.
