Hospital patient with multiple sclerosis reportedly mistreated

Date:

A woman with multiple sclerosis, hospitalized at Larnaca General Hospital, reportedly suffered mistreatment, according to a complaint letter submitted by a family member and obtained by SigmaLive.

The patient was admitted on January 15, 2026, and underwent a scheduled hysterectomy the following day. Her condition was reportedly stable until the evening of January 17, with no immediate signs of danger.

Incident and alleged lapses in care

On the morning of Sunday, January 18, the patient fell into a coma. Her family was informed that a CT scan indicated a stroke and that her condition was irreversible. The family alleges that Nicosia General Hospital refused to accept her, and no neurosurgeon from any public hospital evaluated her condition.

The complaint also states that the patient was found on the bathroom floor, lying face down, partially undressed and wet. The family claims the hospital ignored repeated requests to keep her catheter in place due to her limited mobility, forcing her to attempt to move independently.

According to the letter, the patient fell a second time in the early hours of Sunday, contacting a family member for help. The family emphasizes that the lack of immediate response from hospital staff contributed to her injuries.

Investigation and family demands

The incident is reportedly under investigation by the Ministry of Health and is known to the Cyprus Health Organization (OKYPY).

In their complaint, the family requests:

  • Immediate investigation into the incident.
  • Evaluation by a neurosurgeon (domestic or international if required).
  • Assessment by a forensic pathologist to determine if the stroke resulted from the falls.
  • A review of hospital protocols and staff actions to ensure patient safety.

The family also raised concerns about the planned withdrawal of sedation on January 21, noting that no substantial attempts had been made to improve her condition. They emphasized that they reserve all legal rights.
