Two dead after storms batter Greece, causing floods

Date:

Two people were killed after floods in Greece caused by severe weather on Wednesday, leading to major disruption in several parts of the country, particularly in Attica.

Emergency services were placed on alert as torrential rain, strong winds and rough seas created dangerous conditions and widespread damage.

Woman killed in flood incident in Glyfada

One of the victims was a 56-year-old woman who died on Wednesday night in Ano Glyfada, in the southern suburbs of Athens.

She was walking in the area when a vehicle was swept away by floodwaters and trapped her underneath. Firefighters were called to the scene to carry out a rescue operation, but the woman was recovered without signs of life.

Coast guard officer dies during port patrol

Earlier in the day, a 53-year-old coast guard officer lost his life in Paralio Astros, on the eastern coast of the Peloponnese.

The officer was on foot patrol at the port together with the head of the local coast guard unit when a powerful wave struck as they were attempting to secure vessels. He fell, struck his head, and later died from his injuries.

Flooding and power outages in Attica

The storms caused serious problems across Attica late on Wednesday afternoon, with flooding reported mainly in southern areas.

The Fire Service received hundreds of calls for assistance, while several parts of the Athens metropolitan area were left without electricity for a period of time. Roads were flooded, and traffic disruption was reported, as emergency crews responded to incidents linked to the floods in Greece.

Conditions expected to ease

Meteorologists said weather conditions across Greece are expected to improve by Thursday midday, with rainfall and storm activity gradually weakening.
