King’s Police Overseas Medal awarded to Markos Petrou

Date:

Deputy Assistant Police Commissioner, Inspector Markos Petrou, has been awarded the King’s Police Overseas Medal following the publication of this year’s New Year Honours list.

Recognition of a 30-year career

Inspector Petrou, who serves in Dhekelia and joined the force 30 years ago at the age of 25, described the award as “a very pleasant surprise” and highlighted the importance of recognising his work. He stated: “After 30 years of service, having my efforts acknowledged in this way is a great honour, and I thank those who nominated me.”

Extensive experience across the force

Throughout his career, Petrou has served in nearly every role within the police force, which he believes contributed significantly to his professional development. “I have received tremendous support to advance my career,” he said. “I am especially grateful for this, as it allowed me to grow and improve through many different roles.”

Acknowledging colleagues and the community

Despite his personal pride in receiving the award, Petrou was quick to credit his colleagues of the BB Police: “Although I am the recipient of this medal, it was only possible thanks to the BB Police family, of which I am a member. Over the years, I have worked with many outstanding officers, and I want to thank them all for their hard work, as nothing would have been achievable without them.”

He also recognised the support of the local community he has served: “As a police officer, my primary duty is to contribute to the safety of the community, and by building close ties, we can achieve this effectively. I have always felt the support of the community, even during times of disagreement, and this remains a fundamental part of policing. I hope to continue in the same way for the remainder of my career.”
