President Donald Trump threatened Thursday to invoke the Insurrection Act against Minnesota over widespread demonstrations.
The warning followed federal agents shooting and wounding a man hours earlier, plus a protester’s fatal shooting by an ICE agent last week.
Trump posted on Truth Social demanding Minnesota politicians stop “professional agitators and insurrectionists” attacking ICE personnel.
What is the Insurection Act?
The Insurrection Act is a United States federal law that allows the President to deploy military forces within the country to restore order during times of rebellion, civil unrest, or insurrection.
It gives the President authority to intervene when state governments are unable or unwilling to enforce the law or protect citizens’ rights.
While intended as a last-resort measure, its use is rare and often controversial because it involves the military operating on U.S. soil, which is normally restricted under the Constitution.
Minneapolis tensions escalate
Minneapolis Democratic Mayor Jacob Frey called the situation unsustainable Wednesday night. He stated federal immigration agents exacerbate ground tensions while city leaders seek ways to maintain safety and order.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz urged restraint on X, warning Trump seeks street violence. Walz affirmed Minnesota remains an island of decency, justice, community, and peace.
ICE self-defense shooting
A man suffered a leg wound from federal law enforcement Wednesday in self-defense, per Department of Homeland Security. DHS claimed the officer faced violent assault by the suspect and two others during a Minneapolis arrest.
The agency blamed Walz and Frey’s “hateful rhetoric,” citing a 1,300% assault increase against federal officers.
Legal battles over operations
Trump repeatedly threatened the Insurrection Act, against mass deportation protest violence. A Supreme Court ruling recently deemed prior National Guard deployments to Democratic cities exceeded authority.
Federal Judge Kate Menendez, a Biden appointee, nears a Friday ruling potentially restricting ICE’s nonlethal force, motorist stops, and protest arrests.
Trump called Menendez “highly respected” for delaying decision on Minnesota’s broader “Operation Metro Surge” lawsuit challenging federal authority influx into Minneapolis and St. Paul.
