Tychikos eyes ECHR after Holy Synod ruling

Date:

Former Paphos Metropolitan Tychikos appears poised to appeal to European Court over his removal, per yesterday’s report. Theologian and Holy Archbishopric Associate Giannis Antoniadis addressed potential recourse on Sigma’s “Mesimeri kai Kati,” discussing Synod directives on Tychikos’ required confession.

Antoniadis stated Synod decision remains specific: he must implement Synod and Church of Cyprus rulings. He recalled binding Ecumenical Patriarchate decision following Tychikos’ appeal.

Patriarchate issues clear directives

Ecumenical Patriarchate provided “very specific guiding lines,” advising Tychikos, for his spiritual good and Church unity, to follow Synod decisions.

Antoniadis believes ECHR recourse “will burden him rather than vindicate.” He cited precedent: former Osios Avvakoum Monastery Hegumen case where court ruled jurisdictional incompetence.

Repentance submission questioned

No formal repentance submitted to Synod satisfying requirements, Antoniadis clarified. “He sent something else failing to satisfy Synod. No such deposition made.”

Synod established framework for required Faith Confession.

Crete Synod distinction denied

No discrimination exists requiring Crete Synod inclusion, unlike other cases, Antoniadis stated.

Current demand: Former Paphos Metropolitan must submit Faith Confession declaring obedience to canons/decisions of Local and Ecumenical Synods, from 1st Synod 49 AD through Crete’s 2016 Great Synod.
