Charalambos Charalambous’ resignation after video controversy

Date:

Steps down as Director of the President’s Office

Charalambos Charalambous’ resignation was submitted on Monday, with the Director of the Office of the President of the Republic stepping down following public reaction to a controversial video that recently emerged.

Charalambous announced his decision in a public statement, stating that his resignation was an act of institutional responsibility aimed at protecting the President, the government and the Republic of Cyprus.

Claims of targeted undermining

In his post, Charalambous referred to what he described as a targeted effort to undermine the President of the Republic and the government. He argued that statements attributed to him were selectively extracted and presented out of context, leading to misleading interpretations.

He stressed that he has already provided testimony to the competent authorities, fully cooperating with the investigation, and categorically rejected any suggestion regarding his integrity.

“Act of institutional responsibility”

According to Charalambous, his decision to resign was taken to prevent his continued presence from being used as a tool to damage the government, state institutions or the Republic of Cyprus.

He stated that safeguarding the country, the government and the office of the President was his primary duty, particularly at a time when stability, credibility and clear political discourse are required.

Support for the President and government

In his statement, Charalambous underlined his support for Nikos Christodoulides, noting that he stood by the President from the outset in a shared effort to strengthen the country and its institutions.

He added that he never pursued political ambitions or public office for personal gain, describing his participation in government as a conscious decision to contribute to what he called an ambitious programme of governance.

Call for clarification through institutions

Charalambous said that all institutions of the Republic must act to restore the truth, which he believes will demonstrate the malicious nature of those behind the attack. He stated that he is stepping aside with a sense of pride for what has been achieved over the past three years through what he described as systematic and intensive work by the President and the government.

Concluding his statement, Charalambous expressed confidence that the country’s course would continue, reaffirming his belief that Cyprus would remain committed to its principles, strengthen its international standing and progress for the benefit of its citizens.
