France faces major outages and travel chaos

Storm Goretti strikes northern Europe with fierce winds disrupting electricity for thousands of households. In France, approximately 380,000 households remain without power, mainly in Normandy and Brittany regions, according to electricity distribution network manager Enedis.

Overnight wind gusts reached 150 km/h in northwest France’s Maine department, with a record 213 km/h recorded at Barfleur. Railway operator SNCF suspended train services between Paris and Normandy.

Britain under red alert as snow follows cold

In Britain, power cuts affect 57,000 homes after Goretti brought heavy snow following a week of sub-zero temperatures. BBC reports 65,000 households without electricity, primarily in Cornwall.

Hundreds of schools scheduled to stay closed in Scotland and central England areas hardest hit by the storm. Rail companies in parts of England warned passengers against travel; some services suspended.

Highest alert level issued

Britain’s Met Office declared red alert, the highest level, for severe winds across Isles of Scilly and much of Cornwall region. Red alert impacts approximately half a million people total.

Met Office also warned “very large waves will make some coastal areas extremely dangerous.”
