DISY decides MP Sykas’ fate tonight

Date:

DISY convenes Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. to examine complaint against MP Nikos Sykas for assaulting partner and ratify Executive Bureau’s decision excluding him from party ballot.

Executive Bureau met urgently on Monday adopting leadership recommendation removing Syka from candidacy. Party expulsion also reportedly discussed. Final decisions expected tonight.

DISY President Annita Demetriou publicly called Syka to voluntarily waive parliamentary immunity.

Immunity lift inevitable

Police investigation continues making immunity waiver sole path forward. Limassol TAE case file with witness testimonies from January 4 forwarded to Law Office on Monday for instructions.

Legislation prohibits MP interrogation, arrest, or prosecution without prior Supreme Court immunity waiver. Deputy AG Savvas Angelidis reviewed police file yesterday issuing dual directives.

Law Office directives

First: Immediate Law Office evaluation of gathered testimonies for swift Supreme Court immunity lift request.

Second: Further investigation ensuring adequately justified waiver application.

Greek judicial assistance deemed essential since alleged incident occurred in Athens. Testimonies sought from examining physician plus telephonically informed individuals per complainant’s statement.

Investigators may travel to Athens coordinating procedures if required.

Incident background details

Limassol TAE Violence Unit investigates charges of assault causing actual bodily harm plus psychological violence. Charges may adjust per findings.

Complaint surfaced January 4 when a woman visited Limassol Police HQ reporting physical violence by Sykas while abroad. Post-incident they visited nightclub; subsequent events preceded Athens medical visit before return to Cyprus and formal complaint.

Legal jurisdiction confirmed

Article 5 Penal Code enables Cyprus prosecution of Republic citizens committing offences abroad punishable by over two years imprisonment if criminal under host nation law.

Sykas’ public response

Sykas categorically denies allegations expressing shock at publicity. Public statement affirms respect for investigative processes and readiness to testify presenting “true facts.”

Legal experts note waiver process accelerates if Sykas raises no objection. Supreme Court application expected this week or early next.
