Cyprus dust returns as temperatures rise

Date:

Hazy conditions expected from Tuesday

Weak high pressure is currently affecting the region, while a low-pressure system is expected to gradually move in from Thursday. From Tuesday onwards, Cyprus dust is forecast to appear intermittently in the atmosphere, leading to hazy conditions in several areas.

Today’s weather will be mostly clear, although increasing high cloud cover will develop gradually during the day.

Winds will blow from northeast to southeast, light to moderate at 3 to 4 Beaufort, and at times along the coast up to strong, reaching 4 to 5 Beaufort.

Temperatures will rise to around 17°C inland, approximately 19°C along the southern and eastern coasts, close to 20°C on the western and northern coasts, and around 11°C in the higher mountainous areas.

Overnight outlook and frost risk

Tonight, increased high cloud cover is expected to persist. Winds will shift to northwesterly to northeasterly, and locally southeasterly, remaining light to moderate at 3 to 4 Beaufort, and at times moderate along coastal areas.

The sea will generally be slightly rough, becoming temporarily rough along the northern and eastern coasts. Temperatures will drop to around 8°C inland, about 13°C on the eastern coast, 11°C on the remaining coasts, and close to 4°C in the higher mountains, where local frost is expected to form.

When do the rains return?

On Tuesday and Wednesday, the weather will remain mainly clear, with periods of increased high cloud cover. Dust in Cyprus is expected to persist at intervals during this period.

By Thursday, increased medium and high cloud cover is forecast. From the afternoon onwards, weather conditions over the western half of the island will turn mainly cloudy, with isolated showers expected.

Temperatures will continue to rise gradually until Thursday, remaining above seasonal averages, despite the presence of Cyprus dust and the increasing cloud cover.
