BYD surpasses Tesla in 2025 EV sales

Date:

BYD announced on Thursday that its 2025 battery car sales reached more than 2.25 million units, up almost 28% year-over-year, marking the first time it outpaces Tesla annually. Tesla, set to report full-year figures on Friday, projected around 1.65 million vehicles based on analyst estimates.

Tesla faces multiple challenges

Tesla endured a difficult year marked by mixed feedback on new models, concerns over Elon Musk’s political involvement, and fierce rivalry from Chinese makers like Geely, MG, and BYD. In response, Tesla introduced lower-priced versions of its top-selling models in October. Musk, the richest individual, eyes massive incentives tied to sales growth, stock performance, and ventures like Optimus robots and Robotaxis; early 2025 sales dipped amid Trump administration backlash.

BYD’s competitive edge

BYD, China’s top EV firm, pressures Western brands with aggressive pricing despite slowed growth in its home market. Expansion thrives in Latin America, Southeast Asia, and Europe amid tariffs; the UK became its largest overseas market, with Seal U plug-in hybrid SUV demand surging 880% through September.
