Teacher evaluation starts with six steps – full rollout 2028-2029

Date:

The new teacher and teaching evaluation system, approved by Parliament on December 22, enters its transitional phase immediately despite a full rollout set for 2028-2029. The Monitoring Committee, chaired by Education Ministry General Director Marios Panagidis, convenes in January with ministry executives and union reps. This body holds an advisory role on implementation.

Six initial actions launch in early 2026 to prepare the ground.

Key implementation actions

The first phase includes finalizing timelines based on recent laws. The Evaluation Committee forms to ensure goals are met, preparing tools and procedures promptly. Service Plan for new Senior Teacher role finalizes with unions – targeting educators with 12+ years experience, paid like assistant directors but focused on mentoring without admin duties.

Informational seminars for teachers are scheduled through the first half of 2026. Meetings are arranged with unions to discuss extra demands.

Union discontent persists

POED and OELMEK maintain objections to specific provisions, with decisions for potential strikes still on the table. Collective bodies convene post-holidays to decide next steps. Landscape remains unclear amid disagreements.
