Coldest winter night so far recorded in Cyprus

Date:

Cyprus experienced the coldest winter night of the season so far, with near-freezing temperatures recorded in several inland areas and unusually low readings even along the coast.

Clear skies and weakened winds during the night created ideal conditions for strong temperature inversion, according to meteorological data. This phenomenon allowed cold air to settle near the ground, leading to sharp drops in minimum temperatures across multiple regions.

Near-freezing temperatures inland

The lowest temperature was recorded at the Athalassa weather station near Nicosia, where the mercury dropped to just 0.8°C, coming very close to the freezing point. The clear and calm conditions significantly intensified the overnight cooling in inland areas.

Coastal areas also affected

Despite their proximity to the sea, several coastal and low-lying areas also experienced notable cold. Minimum temperatures fell to around 3°C in areas including Zygi, Larnaca Airport, Aradippou and Xylofagou.

Meteorologists note that such temperature inversion events are more common during periods of stable weather and can result in unexpectedly low temperatures, even in regions that typically remain milder during winter nights.
