Papadopoulou’s son’s “cigarette accident” story unravels

Date:

In January 2022, hours after the fatal Lykavittou Street in Kolonaki apartment fire, the son shaped the narrative, blaming a tragic mishap. Speaking to Proto Thema, he stated his 87-year-old mother Eleni Papadopoulou “fell asleep with a lit cigarette in hand,” portraying a heavy smoker dozing on the couch, leading to an accidental blaze.

The simple account quickly closed questions before key forensics concluded.

Apartment sale clues

Proto Thema then highlighted the prime property valued near €750,000, photos published on real estate sites promoting sale with elegant antique furnishings and high aesthetic value. This detail passed unnoticed amid the accident focus but gains weight with revelations of the son’s push to sell against her wishes.

Under new light, it points to financial pressures.

Arson evidence emerges

Reexamination reports confirm her body and surroundings were soaked in large quantities of flammable liquid, incompatible with random cigarette ignition, but indicate deliberate organized act. Fire was officially no accident, overturning initial claims.

Son’s persistent “cigarette accident” insistence is now scrutinized as a potential misdirection amid economic stakes.
