US-Ukraine Miami talks “productive” despite no breakthrough

Date:

US and Ukrainian envoys described three days of Miami talks as “productive and constructive,” focusing on aligning a 20-point plan, multilateral security guarantees, US security framework for Ukraine, and economic recovery. No major advances emerged to bridge Moscow and Kyiv positions.

US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Ukrainian negotiator Rustem Umerov issued a joint statement prioritizing ending killings, security guarantees, and Ukraine’s stability. Separate US-Russia meetings involved envoy Kirill Dmitriev and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner.

Diplomatic context and Kremlin response

Talks follow a leaked 28-point US peace plan shocking Ukraine and allies for seeming Russia-favorable. Witkoff noted Russia’s commitment to peace; Dmitriev will brief Putin in Moscow. Kremlin dismissed three-way meeting suggestions.

Major sticking points persist, including Russia’s Donbas territorial demands. US intelligence warns Putin seeks full Ukraine control and Soviet-era European reclamation; Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov rejected this.

Ongoing military escalations

Russia intensified Odesa strikes targeting port and energy infrastructure to limit Black Sea access and Moldova routes. Ukraine hit two Russian vessels and piers in Krasnodar via drone, sparking fires but safe crew evacuations; oil infrastructure possibly targeted.
