Russian attacks trigger blackouts across Ukraine

Date:

Several Ukrainian regions suffered power cuts amid frigid winter weather on Tuesday following Russia’s latest large-scale drone and missile assault on energy infrastructure. Ukraine’s energy ministry reported emergency outages across multiple areas as temperatures approached freezing.

Ukraine’s power operator Ukrenergo confirmed fires erupted in several regions from the massive attack. Neighbouring Poland scrambled jets to secure its airspace during the strikes.

Casualties and regional impact

One person died in Khmelnytskyi in the west, and another in Kyiv, according to local authorities. Several injuries, including to children, occurred across regions.

Russia has escalated strikes on Odesa, the southern port city, aiming to cripple maritime logistics. Fresh attacks there sparked fires but caused no injuries, emergency services noted. Black Sea region hits have damaged bridges, ports, and cut electricity and heating to thousands during winter.

Context amid talks

The assaults followed weekend US-mediated negotiations in Miami with Russian and Ukrainian delegations. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov described “slow progress” after separate talks with US envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. Witkoff called discussions constructive, but no breakthroughs emerged.

The war began with Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
